This article will briefly tell you about SCSI – Small Computer System Interface. Also, we will along list the various peripherals or devices that can connect to your computer using SCSI. The article will also clear your perspective about the SCSI, i.e. is SCSI a hardware component or a software component.

What is SCSI – Small Computer System Interface?

SCSI stands for Small Computer System Interface, pronounced as “scuzzy“. SCSI is a Physical interface/component that you can use to connect the computer with various peripheral hardware devices.

A SCSI connection is established when a Male SCSI connector is connected to a Female SCSI Connector. SCSI is a technology that is capable of transferring data between the devices and your computer at a very fast speed.

So, basically, SCSI is a set of standards for physically connecting (SCSI Card) and transferring data (SCSI Protocol) between computers and peripheral devices. The SCSI standards define commands, protocols, electrical, optical and logical interfaces.

What devices can SCSI – Small Computer System Interface connect to computer?

The various devices that can connect to your computer via a SCSI card or interface are disk drives, tape drives, CD-ROM etc.

The SCSI card connects to the Buses or Interfaces on the computer’s motherboard. The peripheral devices then connect to the computer via the SCSI card. SCSI is the most common interface for attaching aforementioned devices to a computer.

Is SCSI a Hardware Or a Software (Protocol)?

SCSI originated as a Parallel Physical Interface and as a Protocol at the same time. The Parallel Physical Interface is to connect the computer to the peripheral device. The SCSI Protocol defines the communication rules between the computer and the peripheral device(s).

The SCSI protocol has grown in its capabilities and functionalities but different types of Serial Physical Interfaces have replaced the traditional Parallel Physical Interface.
